I have been creating art in some capacity for as long as I can remember, and I have always known that I wanted to help others experience the joy that art making brings. I am passionate about what art provides for individuals and their communities. For adolescents especially, I feel that art is an outlet that helps students find their voice. To create is to empower, and I want my students to feel empowered to express themselves in my classroom, without fear of judgement.
As an art educator, it is my job to engage and inspire my students to tap into their creativity. I am deeply passionate about providing a multicultural curriculum that reflects my student's many different backgrounds and identities. I believe seeing a successful artist that looks like them or came from similar circumstances is often the missing piece to spark that excitement and realization that creating art is for everybody. Providing projects with many different mediums, from ceramics and metalworking, to painting and printmaking also allows them to explore what excites them.
Cultivating a safe classroom environment is one of the most vital ways to ensure a student’s success. I create a space where every student feels comfortable in expressing their identity, their dreams, and their thoughts. One of the most beautiful elements of art is how it highlights our extraordinary differences that make us who we are. I will celebrate those differences in my classroom and make a space where my students feel valued being their authentic selves. Great art requires authenticity and authenticity thrives when one is met with acceptance and empathy. As an art educator, I aim to make art accessible, empower students to reach their potential, and ensure that they feel that their voice is heard.
